Of course, there's no word as of yet on whether Soul Carnival is confirmed for a U.S. Although I couldn't tell if those characters will be fully playable later in the game, it seemed like Ichigo was the solitary (and cute) main character.

The last thing I noticed from my hands-on was that you could call out other support characters to assist you in battle, like summoning Orihime, who performs some sort of wave technique that either heals you or has another AOE function. Besides running along the ground, Ichigo could also hop up onto the rooftops and take on some bad guys in style, but this mild platforming element didn't seem to have that much of a bearing on the gameplay. The system felt a bit like a standard button-masher but it was still satisfying and the artistic style made it enjoyable. As Ichigo, you can execute a number of combos, including a jumping slash and aerial projectile attack.

While not mind-blowing, the style and smoothness of the whole affair was impressive and seemed to fit Sony's handheld nicely. The first thing I noticed about Soul Carnival is how nice the animation looked on the PSP screen. Ichigo ran through the two-level stage and faced a number of different enemies. All the characters in the game are drawn in a "chibi" or super-deformed style, which actually worked quite nicely. In the demo, you take on the role of Ichigo as he runs through a 2D environment that, as far as I could tell, appeared to be a section of Soul Society. Although my time with it was short, I got a good sense of what this game is all about.

At this year's TGS, I was able to snag a few minutes of hands-on time with Bleach: Soul Carnival, a side-scrolling action game for the PSP. The anime series has reached an impressive level of popularity and has thus spawned a number of videogames to accompany the franchise. Unless you're completely cut off from the anime scene, you're probably already familiar with Bleach, a manga and anime series revolving around Ichigo Kurosaki, a normal high school student who accidentally obtains the powers of a Soul Reaper.
